Day 1 of North Adams Open Studios was great! Highlight was Frank Curran's demo of his woodblock carving process. Love the smell of fresh wood shavings!

First off, Saturday, October 15 and Sunday October 16 is North Adams Open Studios! studio21south will be open throughout, 10-6 on Sat., and 10-4 on Sun. This is also the last weekend of "Going Coastal" and our last official weekend of the season!

We've also got two great artist demos this weekend, featuring "Going Coastal" and gallery artists Frank Curran and Julia Morgan-Leamon

Frank Curran, "Beginning"

On Saturday from 1-3, the irrepressible Frank will demonstrate woodblock cutting for making prints on paper. He will have on hand a small hand press and ink rollers, as well as examples of other types of blocks used in relief printing such as wood engraving and metal type. (What's wood engraving, and why is it not plain old wood block printing, you ask? Come see!)

..and your presence + participation are required for Julia's workshop on Sunday from 1-3:30. "Flee, Fly, Fall!" is an experimental painting performance. Participants will assist in making a painting about motion (specifically the 'moment before the fall') by posing either in the air OR enacting the position of being in the air, and/or being traced directly onto the paper. Julia will trace, draw, photograph, and paint; she will capture the motion by overlaying and overlapping these gestures on a large painting surface.

One thing the painters in "Re/Imaging New York" (and, come to think of it, all of our other shows...) have in common is a tendency to paint on site. Along the way, they occasionally meet interesting people, mostly forklift drivers. Last week, however, Jaye Fox was working on a late addition to the gallery, and a Williamsburg art blogger snapped a shot of the infant piece, here, re-posted entirely without permission from it's original source at http://hragv.tumblr.com/post/977539226 : The final piece, "Landmark", is the iconic Russian Orthodox church that presides over this little corner of Brooklyn.

It's conceived as a wry companion piece to "What Smell?", of the digester eggs at the Greenpoint sewage treatment plant, featured in an earlier post. Here's an installation shot of the two together:

This is the last weekend for "Common Places", a show celebrating painterly moments in everyday places. It's been terrific to welcome new artists to show in the gallery, among them Julia Morgan-Leamon. Julia's free, painterly style is really something that has to be seen in person, and savored a bit. Confident, direct brushstrokes anchor her work in realism, but also imbue her ordinary subjects with an almost spiritual overtone. Her paintings shimmer with life.

Although his home base is in Greenwich Village, Henry Buerckholtz has an affinity for capturing rural roadside America. His depictions of working farms in the Pioneer Valley (Massachusetts), Ocala (Florida), Long Island and North Carolina honor the particular characteristics of each place, yet manage to feel recognizable and familiar.

Robert Henri Lafond's vibrant pastels stand out with their direct and bold strokes. Bob is always outdoors, sketching directly from nature, on-site. He finishes the work in the studio, sometimes recombining compositional elements before completing the piece. These paintings are rooted in traditional pastel techniques, but their brilliance and directness make them something special. (and did we mention that they're surprisingly affordable? and of course, free to look, so come on by and see us!)

It's also notable that one of us is cynically scornful of "barn pictures", but finds that Bob's graphic treatment and forceful compositions lend a fresh perspective to this familiar subject mattter.

Beginning with basic tools and organic forms, Karen Walter has been building an ongoing grid of mixed media drawings for several years. While still cleaving to the same 7"x7" format, the drawings have evolved in complexity, materials, and technique; now incorporating diverse elements including letterpress, antique papers, and etching. Her mark-making has also evolved and diversified, integrating scratch-work and gouges alongside lyrical, flowing ink washes. We are especially pleased to include Karen in the show, since she had originally worked on the grid drawings during a residency at the former Contemporary Arts Center, which was housed in the loft next door. Now based in her studio in Waltham, this show presents an almost poetic opportunity to return Karen's work to the Beaver Mill at a later state in their evolution, as well as North Adams'.

So, Monhegan Island has been a picturesque lobstering and fishing community since who-knows-when. For about the past 100 years, it's been a haven and inspiration for artists like Edward Hopper, Rockwell Kent, all the Wyeths you can think of, and George Bellows. But, perhaps wisely, they've treated it as a summer escape. It takes a special kind of artist to haul yourself and your young family up to remote Monhegan in the winter time! That artist is Frank Bruckmann. These paintings are on their way to studio21south! Also, you can follow this painter's progress (and that of his lovely family) on their blog!
